On Tuesday, June 18th, the London Irish Business Society (LIBS), in association with Davy will welcome two of Ireland’s most senior business leaders to the Andaz hotel on Liverpool Street. Tommy Breen, CEO of DCC PLC, and Partrick Coveney, CEO of Greencore Group PLC, continue to run two of Ireland’s most successful businesses through one of the mostly challenging times in Irish corporate history. Drawing on both their domestic, and international experience, London Irish Business Society members will gain an invaluable insight into the inner workings of large Irish corporations. Tommy Breen, B Sc (Econ), FCA, was appointed Chief Executive on 27 May 2008 having been Group Managing Director from July 2007. He was previously Chief Operating Officer and has held a number of other senior management positions in the Group. Mr. Breen joined DCC in 1985, having previously worked with KPMG.

DCC is a sales, marketing, distribution and business support services Group. The Group operates in many sectors, including Energy, IT & Entertainment Products, Healthcare, Environmental Services and Food & Beverage.

Patrick Coveney, B Comm, M Phil, DPhil, joined the Board of Greencore on 5 September 2005 and was appointed Chief Executive with effect from March 2008. Previously he held the position of Group Chief Financial Officer. Patrick was a partner with McKinsey & Company, serving as managing partner of McKinsey, Ireland before joining Greencore. Patrick was elected President of The Dublin Chamber of Commerce in February 2012.

Greencore Group plc manufactures and distributes a diverse range of primary foods and related products, food ingredients and prepared foods to the consumer and industrial sectors.

Paddy Fun Run

On Friday the 31^st of May, a group of young Irish people are organising a charity 10k run in Battersea followed by an after party. The run takes place at 6:30pm with the post run celebrations set to commence at 8pm! All of the details about the event and how to register for the event can be found athttp://www.paddyfunrun.com/

The event is raising money for two very worthy Irish charities, RESPECT and the Irish Youth Foundation, and we hope this event will go a long way towards helping them reach their goals for the year.

Starting with the Irish Youth Foundation, they are the only charity in the UK that is specifically aimed at helping young Irish people and their families in the UK.

The IYF supports a wide range of welfare organisations and community groups providing: help for the homeless, women and children escaping violence, young offenders and prisoners; employment and training schemes; drug rehabilitation; cultural activities and cross-community initiatives.

RESPECT is also another fantastic charity which was founded by the Daughters of Charity to raise funds for capital projects improving the care and accommodation facilities of people with intellectual disabilities in Ireland. RESPECT care for people from infancy right through to old age, with the focus being on the dignity and quality of life of the residents and attendees at their centres.”

Falling labour costs, a youthful workforce, and an increasingly supportive business environment has led to 9 of the top 10 global ICT companies now maintaining a strong presence in Ireland. This has resulted in an abundance of young start-ups choosing to grow their businesses in Ireland, and setting the stage for it to become the European destination of choice for ICT.

Tim Jones, Partner, Freshfields, Bruckhaus Deringer LLP

Working behind the scenes since 2003, Freshfields’ involvement in the London Olympics began in earnest in 2009, when they were appointed official legal services provider for the Games. Tim Jones, a Corporate Partner of thirty years experience, was entrusted as the partner responsible for the firm’s role as official legal services provider to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In this capacity he co-ordinated all aspects of Freshfields’ involvement, bringing together expertise from all the firm’s practice groups to deliver a range of multifaceted services.

Since then, more than 300 of the firm’s employees were involved, including over 30 lawyers on secondment to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).

Terry Miller, General Counsel, LOCOG

Terry heads a legal team responsible for providing advice on all aspects of LOCOG’s operations, including how to meet the terms of the Host City Contract with the IOC, implementation of sponsorship and supply contracts and protection of the London 2012 brand. Before joining LOCOG in October 2006, Terry spent seventeen years at Goldman Sachs, where she was a partner and served as International General Counsel of Goldman Sachs International. Before that, she was a partner in the law firm of Kirkpatrick and Lockhart, specialising in matters relating to investment companies. She began her career with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, where she was a Branch Chief in the Enforcement Division. 2006, Terry was selected as Legal Week’s General Counsel of the Year.

The London Irish Business Society recently held an evening dedicated to discussing the challenges of leadership in sport. Conor O’Shea is a former Leinster, London Irish and Ireland international. He was Managing Director of London Irish before being appointed Director of the English Institute of Sport. Conor then returned to rugby to become Director of Rugby at Harlequins who became Champions of the Aviva Premiership in May. Ian O’Riordan, Senior Sports Correspondent of The Irish Times, chaired the evening.

McCann FitzGerald, in association with the London Irish Business Society, hosted an evening with Mr. John Moran – Secretary General of the Department of Finance. In his role, Mr. Moran is responsible for all economic, budgetary, fiscal and financial services, policy matters and management of the State’s shareholding in government supported banks.

Prior to being appointed to the Department of Finance, Mr. Moran was Head of Wholesale Banking at the Central Bank of Ireland. Previous to this, he held the position of CEO and Board Member of Zurich Bank, CEO of Zurich Capital Markets as well a number of other positions with McCann FitzGerald, GE Capital Aviation Services, GPA Group and Sullivan & Cromwell.

At the event, he drew from experiences and insights that he has gathered, and discussed some of the opportunities that he sees a career in law can offer.

Is Ireland Europe’s Problem or is Europe Ireland’s Problem?

On Thursday, the 1st of March the London Irish Business Society hosted a lively debate on Ireland’s future relationship with the European Union. With the EU’s increasing influence over the affairs of its member states, questions continue to be raised about the merits of centralisation of certain sovereign powers to Brussels.

With it’s esteemed panel, the London Irish Business Society examined Ireland’s relationship with Europe and questioned if Europe will continue to prosper, or if small nations such as Ireland will decide to maintain certain power.

The Panel included: RTE Commentator & Economist, George Lee; FT Journalist, Vincent Boland; and Stephen Donnelly T.D. for Wicklow & East Carlow.

George Lee

George Lee has been an economic analyst and reporter at Ireland’s national broadcasting organization since 1992 and was appointed Economics Editor at RTE in 1996. He won the Journalist of the Year Award in 1998 for uncovering a major tax evasion and over-charging scandal in the National Irish Bank. Prior to his move into broadcasting, he was Senior Economist at Riada Stockbrokers, a Treasury Economist with FTI, and also worked as an economist with the Central Bank in Dublin. He is a graduate of University College Dublin and holds an MSc in Economics from the London School of Economics.

Vincent Boland

Vincent Boland joined Lex in 2010, based in London. He has been a foreign correspondent for the FT in Prague, Ankara and Milan, and covered international capital markets between 1997 and 2003 in London and New York, most recently as capital markets editor.

He graduated with a degree in French and History from University College Dublin and worked for Bank of Ireland in the 1980s, including five years in private client investment management. He joined the FT in 1994 after a period at The Irish Times.

Stephen Donnelly T.D.

Stephen Donnelly was elected as a TD for the Wicklow constituency at the 2011 general election. A graduate of University College Dublin (UCD) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Donnelly spent most of his career as a management consultant with McKinsey & Company.

Joe Lynam is a business correspondent for a variety of BBC programmes.
