Ireland’s Property Market – Time for Opportunity?

 With Ireland having faced one of the world’s most dramatic property market crashes, the London Irish Business Society, in association with CBRE, examined the future for the industry and why many believe a great deal of opportunity now exists within the sector. The audience on the night had an opportunity to hear from some Ireland’s leading experts in retail and commercial property.

The evening will feature a panel discussion with the following panellists:

Marie Hunt, CBRE
Executive Director, CBRE Ireland
Almost 18 years ago, Marie Hunt established the research department at CBRE Ireland, which is now regarded as one of the most authoritative sources of property information in the Irish market.  A regular commentator in the Irish media on property matters, Marie produces a range of property market publications and carries out specialist consultancy work on behalf of a broad range of institutional, private and public sector clients.  Marie is a chartered surveyor and a Fellow of the Society of Chartered Surveyors, Ireland.  She was appointed to the Board of CBRE in 2005.

Pat Gunne, Green Property

Pat Gunne has been Managing Director of Green Property since January 2009. He spearheaded the growth of the workout business in partnership with Banking institutions and Private Equity companies, adding €1.5bn to assets under management in 4 years. In 2013 Pat was involved in Ireland’s first Reit launch with €300m raised from international and domestic institutions. In 1997, he took over his family property consultancy in Ireland, and during his 11 years as Managing Director grew revenue at a 9 multiple to take over as market leaders in Ireland. In 2007 Pat sold the family firm to CB Richard Ellis.  He was on the European Board of CB Richard Ellis, the world’s largest property services firm, for 2 years prior to his departure.

John Mulcahy is a chartered surveyor and has worked in all aspects of the property industry for over 40 years, most recently concentrating on property investment and asset management.

Deirdre Foley, D2 Private
Owner and CEO

Deirdre is one of Ireland’s most successful financiers and property professionals with over 15 years’ experience in property investment and development. She has also been recognised as one of the top women in property in the UK throughout two UK property cycles and is well regarded and respected within both the British and Irish property industries. During her property career to date she has been directly and indirectly involved in the buying and selling of property assets and raising debt and equity of approx. £3 billion. Throughout the last four years her approach to dealing with the crisis in the property industry has been to employ an intensive, active, hands on style of management to investments, developments, leasing and tenants, investor relations and banking relationships, including NAMA. Deirdre has a strong relationship with many of the banks and has also worked closely with NAMA since its inception. Whilst acting on behalf of a US Fund she was the first to structure a property acquisition using NAMA staple finance in 2012. She also enjoys strong relationships with many international funds given the existing platforms in both Dublin and London and is ideally positioned to take advantage of opportunities that are arising both in Ireland & the UK.

D2 Private was cofounded by Deirdre Foley in 2004 to take advantage of opportunities in the property market both in Ireland & the UK. D2 Private is now 100% owned by Deirdre Foley and she has been its CEO since inception. D2 Private has offices based both in Dublin & London. Since 2004 it has acquired on behalf of itself and various co investors a central London property portfolio which was valued at one point in excess of £1.4Bn. This portfolio was composed primarily of iconic, high quality office buildings. In recent years Deirdre managed the sale of many of these landmark West End real estate most notably 12 St James’ Square and 23 Savile Row where she has achieved outstanding returns for investors. These and other large iconic sales have provided a unique learning opportunity on the investment sales side of property and an exceptional familiarity and understanding of international capital flows into the UK and Ireland.As regards the future Deirdre Foley plans to once again create, with a like minded and ambitious team, a new property related portfolio in both Dublin and London.She holds a Master’s degree in Accounting from the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business at University College Dublin and a first class honours B.Comm degree from NUI Galway. She joined KPMG in 1992 and qualified as a Chartered Accountant before joining GE Capital. Deirdre is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland. She also worked for Quinlan Private for a number of years.She regularly supports various charities and fund raising initiatives. And given the opportunity enjoys sailing, shooting and cycling.
